FAME – Festival and Major Events in Canada

The Beaches International Jazz Festival is a proud member of FAME – Festival and Major Events in Canada, an organization that recognizes our accomplishments at a national level. We are now part of a festival family that includes TIFF, Calgary Stampede, Montreal Jazz Festival and Ottawa Blues Fest. As a member, our vision is to broaden the range of Tourism products to the Beach and The City of Toronto.

Youth Jazz Program – Festival Partnership Continues to Promote Youth Jazz Artists

Several years ago the BIJF completed a very successful 4 year Youth Initiatives Program made possible by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. We had many great year-round programs engaging youth as artists, learners, volunteers, and audience members. Even though that program has been completed, we are thrilled to be able continue with our Youth Initiatives including: promoting, partnering and giving performing opportunities to young musicians. This year is no exception. We will be showcasing the amazing musicians from the Discovery Through the Arts music school ‘Generation Ensemble’ program and will be having the fantastic jazz combos from Youth Jazz Canada summer workshop performing on our OLG Main Stage on July 28 and July 29, 2018.

Fundraising for the Michael Garron Hospital

Michael Garron Hospital (formerly the Toronto East General Hospital) is the primary health care provider for the fastest growing area of Toronto and one of the most culturally and demographically diverse communities in Canada. Serving over one million people in Toronto’s east end, the hospital registers over 200,000 patient visits, delivers 3,400 babies and responds to over 60,000 emergency visits annually.

The Festival has been a long time hospital supporter. Because it’s just never too early to start appreciating jazz, the hospital had a room named after the Festival in their Child Health Centre.

Fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy Canada – Kew Beach Fire Hall Firefighter Boot Drive

Each year during the Festival’s Streetfest event, Kew Beach Fire Hall Firefighters open up the Fire Hall and put on their Boot Drive during at the Festival to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

On July 26-28, 2018 the Firefighters will provide the chance to “fill their boots” with cash for Muscular Dystrophy! Every dollar you provide goes towards this worthy cause.

Toronto Police 55 Division

Toronto Police 55 Division

Toronto Police 55 Division – Our Community Safety Partners at Festival Time

The philosophy of the Toronto Police Service 55 Division, which services the Beach, is heavily focused on community-oriented policing. In this regard, 55 Division has an auxiliary police program that encompasses volunteer police officers that help with crowd control during special events like our Jazz Festival. These are trained civilian volunteers, outfitted in uniforms that are similar to those of full-fledged police officers, trained in civilian authority and basic use of force. Their main role is to assist with community events. Auxiliary police officers also help to locate missing children during special events; assist with community outreach and crime prevention and play a critical role in supporting the police force. The Festival works closely with 55 Division. Although we have very large and enthusiastic crowds attending the Festival, we rarely have problems with crowd control or traffic management. Our audience is re-assured by the help provided by the police, both paid and volunteers. The Festival is apparently a favourite event for police officers and trained civilians to participate in. It’s become a yearly ritual for some.

Understanding the value of community engagement, the Festival helps sponsor and support community based projects and programs identified by the 55 Division’s Community Police Liaison Committee, projects and programs such as the Toronto Police Service Scholarship fund.

“Jazz Up Your Windows” Contest – in Partnership with the Beach Village BIA

The Festival isn’t simply about getting people to soak up the music and the ambience. It’s also about getting visitors to support Beach retailers, restaurants, coffee bars and other establishments. So for the month of July, all store front establishments in and around the Beach are invited to “jazz up their windows” in celebration of the Beaches International Jazz Festival. Certificates and prizes are offered for the “best dressed windows”. This juried event bases winning selections on the following three criteria: Imagination, professional execution and integration of elements of jazz music. This yearly event is run by the Beach Business Improvement Area (Beach BIA), which also partners with the Festival on a number of other co-marketing ventures in order to raise the profile of local Beach businesses.
