Teeny Tucker

Teeny Tucker

Upon hearing about Teeny Tucker’s third independent release, The Two Big M’s, honouring Big Mama Thornton and Big Maybelle, one’s left to marvel at the ambition of the singer and question as to whether she has the goods to pull it off. Suffice to say that the first notes of “Hound Dog” from this powerhouse singer dispel any doubts about her vocal skills.

Tucker, who hails from Columbus Ohio, is the daughter of Tommy Tucker of “Hi Heel Sneakers” fame. Her career started in earnest in 1996 after a crowd pleasing performance at the famed Apollo Theatre and Teeny has since has graced the main stage of a number of high profile venues including a show stopping performance last year at the highly regarded Poconos Blues Festival.

While her high octane performances have commanded attention, it’s the The Two Big M’s that has caught the imagination of critics and audiences alike on the international Blues scene. The disc was nominated for best self-produced CD by the Blues Foundation of Memphis Tennessee, made a number of 2008 “best of” lists, and was the driving force for her award for “2008 Best Female Blues Artist” of the year by Illinois’ Blues Blast Magazine. (Adding even more significance to this award is that Ms. Tucker was the people’s choice among such luminaries as the recently departed Queen of The Blues, Koko Taylor, and Betty LaVette).

Teeny Tucker will be making her first Canadian appearance at The Beaches International Jazz Festival on Saturday July 18th in what promises to be a performance to remember.
