With each passing season, the Beaches International Jazz Festival continues to entertain you with its wealth and incredible diversity of musical offerings found within Toronto’s borders and beyond. Close to seventy bands this season alone - but who’s counting!

This year we’re highlighting our strong cultural ties with Cuba’s musical offerings. In a short stretch of time dating back to the mid 1990s, Cuban musicians have arrived fully equipped with skills beyond the norm and quickly moved to the front of the class. Pianist Hilario Duran and drummer Dafnis Prieto filtered throughJane Bunnett’s explorations of Cuban music as did pianist David Virellis. There are many names of Cuban extraction associated with Bunnett and Larry Kramer that continue to branch out and form associations beyond the above-noted luminaries. This year we’re paying homage to these musicians and tapping into the inner Cubano spirit in all of us.

Look forward to soaring with us as the BIJF MainStage comes alive with dynamic brass sections and tropical sensations. Look for Hilario Duran and his 18 piece Latin jazz orchestra to be one of the long talked about concerts of the summer. Blend that with David Virelles’s contemporary jazz, Café Cubano and Roberto Occhipinti’s Mambo Q, for a full week of intense percussive interplay.

Move from the extraverted to the introspective by chilling with the soulful offerings of singers Rusty Zinn, Lou Pride and Darrell Nulisch - who’ll be appearing at both Parti Gras and Kew Gardens. Listen to blues sounds emanating along Queen Street E. with bands like Fathead, Dave Rotundo, Margaret Stowe, Johnny Max and Diana Braithwaite.

Back at MainStage Kew Gardens, experience the swinging Wes Montgomery like styling of Jake Langley – a serious jolt of New Orleans blues from Janiva MagnessRobi Botos’ high flying quartet – David Buchbinder’s classy Shurm Burum Circus – pop jazz cross over specialist Kush and Real Divas center stage with Liberty Silver, Shakura S’Aida, Heather Bambrick, June Garber, and rising stars Janelle Headley and Sophie Berkel-Sarbit while relaxing in our licensed outdoor BIJF Jazz Lounge located adjacent to the MainStage.

Check out Parti Gras, our warm-up party to the main event, where it’s a true diva hang with a vast array of talented young and established singers from Shakura S’Aida to Janelle HeadleyJune Garber to Melissa BoyceHeather Bambrick to Melissa PisarzowskiBonnie Brett to Janelle Monique and a couple of hard core crooners, George Evans and Tory Cassis who keep the momentum flowing. Plan to attend Parti Gras’ All-Star-Jam - starting at 11 pm at The Archeo (Boiler House Complex) on Saturday July 22, hosted by the Gary Kendall Band.

Are you a jazz junkie in need of a further fix? Once again we’re proud to announce a wide selection of FREE “jazz” clinics open to the public. TD Canada Trust supports this effort, helping us present workshops like -Traditional Cuban Drumming (Rosendo Leon Arocha Jr.), Latin Percussion (Joaquin Hildago), Get That First Gig (Rico Ferrara), Art of Jazz Singing (Heather Bambrick and David Braid), Art of Jazz Improvisation (Reg Schwager and Roy Patterson), Vocal Jazz Arranging (Cadence), photographic sessions at the Toronto Camera Club with video director Chris Gentile and jazz photographer Don Vickery and MORE.

We’ve assembled a full week of activities rich in local and international talent and high in artistic value. Set aside July 21 to 30 as BIJF TIME. Grab your friends and family and join us in the festivities. See you soon.
